Thalibaldus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thalibaldus (Latvian Tālivaldis , † 1215 ) was a Latvian elder from Trikāta.

Life

Heinrich of Latvia reported about Thalibaldus in his chronicle. For 1208 he was named as one of three seniores of Latvians. Its seat was Beverin Castle, the location of which is unclear today. He was an ally of the Princes of Pskov and an Orthodox Christian - probably paying tribute . In 1211 he was referred to as a senior in Tricatua Province (Trikāta). In 1213, Thalibaldus was captured by Lithuanians on a military campaign in his area, at that time he was probably an ally of the German sword brothers . After one of his sons tried to free himself, Thalibaldus was able to escape the Lithuanians in their land. After seven days without food, he finally returned home happily.

In 1215 Thalibaldus was captured by the Estonian Sakata and Ugandi and extorted for money over fire. After declaring that he would not give more than a certain amount, he was burned. His sons then moved to Estonia on a retaliatory campaign.
