Ugandi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ugandi ( Latin Ugaunia , German obsolete Ugaunia ) was a historical empire and a landscape in the south of today's Estonia until 1224 .

The Ugandi region presumably included the areas of today's Tartu , Põlva , Võru and partially Valga counties in southern Estonia. Ugandi had two centers: Tarbatu (now Tartu ) and Otepää . The name Ugandi is mentioned for the first time in the Chronicle of Henry of Latvia (1225-1227).

With the conquest and Christianization of Tarbatus by the Teutonic Order in 1224, the native Estonian population of Uganda became Catholic. In the same year, the Dorpat diocese was founded in the area.

The Latvian name Igaunija for Estonia is derived from the Latin name Ugaunia .
