The Abused are a New York hardcore band that formed in 1981 and had a significant impact on the genre.

history

At the time The Abused was formed, its members were teenagers, ages 13-15. The first appearances took place in the A7 , a small club in the East Village , which from 1981 represented the first venue for bands of the emerging hardcore genre in New York. After the New York club CBGB opened up to hardcore bands and held hardcore matinees on Sundays , The Abused could also play there, but, unlike other bands, had to leave a deposit in order to cover any damage that might arise. In 1983 the band released their only sound carrier along with a demo cassette from 1982, the EP "Loud and Clear", which was released on the label Abused Music, which the band founded especially for this purpose, and was limited to 500 copies , in accordance with the DIY idea that shaped the hardcore scene . The eight tracks were recorded in the Hi-Five studios in New York, which were later also used by Reagan Youth and the Cro-Mags . The tape photo on the back of the cover is from Randy Underwood, who was also responsible for the photos on the first Agnostic front - EP United Blood . After the EP was released, the band members played together for a while, but then ended their musical careers. The band was never officially dissolved.

In December 2008 the band came together for a one-time concert. In 2013 an extended new edition of their EP was released, which comprised 21 tracks.

Singer Kevin Crowley, who was responsible for the entire artwork and the concert flyer for the band, is still active as a draftsman in his spare time, for example, he designed covers for the hardcore bands Waste Management and Shark Attack.

style

The Abused play medium to fast New York Hardcore with clear Oi influences. The frequent changes in tempo and the metal , sometimes krautrock-like guitar solos are striking .

As one of the first representatives of New York Hardcore, The Abused were style-defining for the genre. Roger Miret classifies the band as one of the most important representatives of the genre despite their low output. Keith Burkhardt from Cause for Alarm sees the band as one of the founding fathers of the New York hardcore sound. The occurrence of abused pieces on various hardcore samplers, including on the German Lost & Found label, reflects this importance.

Lyrically, The Abused were close to the straight edge movement that began in Washington in 1981. Some of the Abused lyrics promote a drug-free life, and a phrase from the song Drug Free Youth was the hook for the band name of the New York straight-edge band Youth of Today .

Singer Kevin Crowley is the creator of the New York Hardcore logo, consisting of the letters N, Y, H and C before a capital X, which is still used by many bands in the genre today.
