The Ancient Economy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ancient Economy ( The ancient economy ) is one of the American classical philologist Moses Finley authored book on the economy of classical antiquity.

The ancient economy was first published in 1973. Finley deals with the ancient economy between 1000 BC. And 500 AD. Finley studies the economy not with economic models, but with sociological methods. He argues that the ancient economy was largely a by-product of social standing. The analysis uses ideas from Max Weber and Karl Polanyi .

Finley looks at ancient economic thinking, wealth distribution , the role of the state, the function of slavery, and the tax system. To this day, Finley's book is considered the most influential work on ancient economics and his theses are still debated today.
