German version

The song was a number one hit in Germany in the German version as Hundert Mann und ein Orders with the lyrics by Ernst Bader and in the version sung by Freddy Quinn . A version sung by Heidi Brühl reached number 8 in the German charts.

The German text is written from the soldier's point of view and questions the meaning of the war, while the English text is a hymn to the special unit. Heidi Brühl sings the German text slightly different from the perspective of a girl who is waiting for her boyfriend. The song was used as theme music in the film The Green Devils .
