Gabriel Knight is a three-part series of computer games of Adventure - genres that of Sierra On-Line have been developed and published. The stories in the series were written by American mystery novelist Jane Jensen . The game belongs to the genre of point & click adventure (complete control with the mouse) and is in 2D graphics in the first two parts, but this changes in the third part, in which the game is in 3D graphics.

Content of the game

In all three parts, Gabriel's main task is to solve mysterious murders and kidnappings. In the first part you only play the character of Gabriel, in the other two parts there is an alternation between him and Grace, whereby Grace usually takes on the obvious mental work and Gabriel is more on the move to find puzzles for Grace. The puzzles are solved through many conversations as well as by finding clues, secret passages and the like. However, there is no danger of overlooking any important hints, as the game only continues or opens up new possibilities once you have completed all the tasks in a certain section.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

In the first part of Gabriel Knight, which was published in 1993 and is set in New Orleans, attempts are made to discover the secret of several gruesome voodoo murders. After a corpse, the last murder victim, was found on the beach, Gabriel, who is plagued by nightmares, tries to solve the murder case. He meets Malia Gedde, an exotic beauty with whom he immediately falls in love. Still, he has bad premonitions that she is also involved in the case. With the help of his assistant Grace and his uncle in Germany, however, he finally solves the mystery of the murders.

The game received numerous awards, not least for its engaging story, which Jane Jensen tells in both a mystical and realistic way. A little specialty was a comic that was included with the game, which told a little story about the game.

The first part of the series was released for MS-DOS, Mac OS and Windows on CD-ROM and as a download. The USK released the game from the age of 12.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers - 20th Anniversary Edition

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the first Gabriel Knight part, a remake was published on October 15, 2014, which was developed by Jane Jensen's company Pinkerton Road Studio and published by Phoenix Online Studios as a download for Windows and Mac OS only. It largely sticks to the game from 1993, but has also added new features. In addition to HD graphics and a revised soundtrack, this game now also includes new scenes, riddles and puzzles.

Characters

Gabriel Knight

Gabriel is blond, in his early 30s and still lives in the first part in New Orleans, where he runs the bookstore he bought with the money from the inheritance of his parents who died in a traffic accident. His main occupation, however, is to solve secret and mysterious cases, as he is a "shadow hunter" (a fighter against the dark), as is his great-grandfather and great-uncle Wolfgang Ritter, from whom he took over the task in Part 1 after his death. Gabriel only found out about the whole thing from the latter, in Part 1, because his grandfather did not want anything to do with shadow hunting, had emigrated to America and started a new life as an accountant under a new name (Knight instead of Ritter). Gabriel is quick to get enthusiastic about women and does not save at first with sexist comments to Grace, but he only covers up the fact that he really has feelings for her. His appearance usually gives him good opportunities with women (leather jacket, tight jeans ...). He appears very sarcastic and cynical towards his best friend from childhood, which occasionally gets him into trouble. In the original of parts 1 and 3 Gabriel Knight is voiced by the actor Tim Curry . In "Sins of the Fathers" he can also be heard in the German version, as the game was only subtitled and not dubbed.

Grace Nakimura

Grace is Gabriel's good-natured, albeit sometimes sharp-tongued employee and later also an assistant. She originally comes from Japan, but came to the USA with her parents at the age of three (as heard in Gabriel Knight I in the first chapter). She is often very worried about him because she thinks he is irresponsible and takes care of him. She also feels drawn to him, which v. a. in the third part of the game it becomes clear when she sleeps with him. At the end of the third part, however, she leaves Gabriel because he just can't decide what he wants.

Detective Mosley

Mosley is a childhood friend of Gabriel who now works in the New Orleans Police Department. He's a bit plump and also very bumbling, especially when it comes to women, which is why Gabriel often makes fun of him. Nevertheless, he is a good friend and helper of Gabriel.
