The magazine references a shared past with the American magazine The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery with the tape count starting in 1919. The British edition first appeared in February 1948 under the name The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (British Edition) and was thus distinguished from the American edition The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (American Edition) . The two editions were financially and editorially independent of each other. In 2013, the name was changed to the current name. The magazine is published twelve times a year. Works are published that deal with orthopedic and trauma surgery issues.
