The Cambridge History of English and American Literature was first published between 1907 and 1921. It consists of 18 volumes with 303 chapters on more than 11,000 pages and was written by 171 leading scholars of the early 20th century .

The chapters on English literature start with Old English poetry and end with the late Victorian era . The American literature is described by the colonial period and the war of independence until the early 20th century. When it was published, the Cambridge History was the most important work in literary history to date .
