The Conet Project

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations (German The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations ) is a documentation project by number transmitters worldwide. The project consists of five CDs put together by clandestine station experts Akin Fernandez and Andre Fischer. Numerous broadcasts from unidentified shortwave stations are documented on the CDs, which presumably serve to communicate with intelligence service employees ("spies") abroad.

The Conet Project has not only attracted professional attention, but has also inspired numerous musicians and filmmakers, such as Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy , Boards of Canada , The Besnard Lakes , Devendra Banhart , former Faith No More singer Mike Patton, and director Cameron Crowe and others.

Surname

The name of the project comes from the misunderstood Czech word "konec" or "Ende", which documented the end of Czech broadcasts. Even though numerous stations that were still active after the Cold War were documented, in most cases the meaning and purpose of the Conet project could not be clarified either.
