content

The author SM Stirling describes a fictional society that contains elements from a number of historical societies (Sparta, American Southern States, Ottoman Empire etc.). The "Dominion of the Draka", the official name of the state, is located in Africa and Southwest Asia at the beginning of the book. During the "Eurasian War", a counterpart to our Second World War , the "Dominion" spreads over almost all of Eurasia after the destruction of Nazi Germany. After that, the Cold War between the "Dominion" and the United States of America and its allies (later "Aliance for Democracy") is further expanded. With elements like slavery, racism and militarism, the Dominion takes on the exact opposite role to the USA and is also referred to as "anti-USA". In the course of the book, the technology develops faster due to the mutual pressure, which means that by the middle of the last chapter, interplanetary space travel has become the norm. At the end of the novel there is a total biological and atomic war in which the "Alliance for Democracy" in the Earth's solar system is destroyed and a large part of humanity is annihilated. However, the Dominion does not achieve a complete victory and must guarantee future full citizenship for the Alliance's survivors.
