The Fairey Band

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fairey Band (at times also The Williams Fairey Brass Band ) is a British brass band that was founded in 1937 and is still active today with changing line-ups. The music style of the band is diverse, so traditional and modern brass music pieces, jazz and evergreens rearranged for a brass section are interpreted.

The band, which has won numerous prizes in national competitions throughout its history, was best known outside the brass music scene for its 1997 album Acid Brass , which presented well-known acid house tracks in brass music versions.

history

The band was formed in 1937 by workers at the aircraft manufacturer Fairey Aviation Company in Stockport . In its early days it was directed by the eminent conductor Harry Mortimer . After it was founded, it went through numerous name changes that were due to the name change of the Fairey company. In 1941 she won the British Open Championships for the first time . Their most successful period, however, was the 1990s, when they won the European Brass Music Championships in 1994 and also caused a sensation in the electronic dance music scene in 1997 with the Acid Brass Project .

The Acid Brass Project

The acid brass project was initiated by the London artist Jeremy Deller who, thanks to the enthusiasm of the brass music expert and musician John Creswell, was able to hire the band on a minimal budget of £ 2,000. In the project, well-known acid house and Detroit techno tracks by artists such as 808 State , The KLF and Kevin Saunderson were performed by the Fairey Band without describing the arrangement. The arrangement for the album was done by the English composer Rodney Newton , who works with the band . In November 1997 the album was first released on the Blast First label , shortly afterwards on Mute Records . There is a live version as well as a studio version, and a 12 "maxi has also been released.
