The Flying Man is a 1962 British animated short directed by George Dunning .
action
A man puts down his things, jumps up and begins to swim in a swimming motion, staying up but not moving forward. A man appears with his dog. When the dog starts to bite into the flying man's things, the flying man stops moving and returns to the ground. He puts on his clothes and leaves. The man stays behind with his dog. The man takes off his hat and tries to imitate the man who flies. After jumping into the air, however, it only ever lands on the ground. When the dog begins to bite into the man's hat, the man takes the hat and puts it on with a twist. He kicks the dog and leaves.
production
The short film The Flying Man was animated in watercolors on glass. The very free, thick brushstrokes, which the individual figures hardly have a solid appearance and even seem to float in the air, were considered innovative and experimental. Dunning became one of the leading British animators of his time with this and other films in which he refined his technique (including The Ladder , 1967).
Awards
The Flying Man won the Grand Prix (later Cristal d'Annecy) of the Festival d'Animation Annecy in 1962 .
