The Grange (Port Ellen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grange , often also United Free Church Manse , is a former rectory of the United Free Church of Scotland . It is located in the Scottish town of Port Ellen on the Hebridean island of Islay . The building stands on Lennox Street on a hill in the northeast part of the city. On August 28, 1980, the building was placed on the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

description

The building was erected acentrically in 1847 on a square lot. It has two floors and ends with a slate-covered gable roof . Above the entrance door there is a small canopy which is supported by two pillars. The construction corresponds to the traditional, local style, with the facade being plastered using the Harling technique. At the rear there is a wing facing north. In 1914 it was decided to connect the building on the outskirts to the water and sewage system. In April 2012, an application for structural changes was granted. This included the approval to convert the one-story outbuilding into a holiday apartment as well as the construction of a detached garage.
