The Great American Scream Machine in Six Flags Over Georgia ( Austell , Georgia , USA ) is a wooden roller coaster manufactured by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters with the serial number 142 , which opened in April 1973.

It is 32 m high and has a top speed of 92 km / h. At the time of its opening, it was considered the largest wooden roller coaster in the world and its passengers received a Red Badge of Courage (award of bravery).

Information about the railway

A computer-controlled block system of brakes is used to prevent trains from coming too close. GASM has five block sections, the transfer platform, the lift hill , the final brake and the safety brake . Usually two trains are used, but only one train can be used. If one train in two-train operation has not yet left the station completely, the second train is suddenly stopped in the final brake. A combination of proximity switches, mechanical switches, photoelectronic sensors and timers are used by the controller to register the train movement.

Before there was computer control, operators used a lever to control the braking system. An operator at the end of the station operated the final brakes and an operator at the beginning of the station operated the brakes in the station.

When the nearby Chattahoochee River is in high water , the runway can be submerged a few feet in water.

Trains

The Great American Scream Machine has two trains with four cars each. Six people (three rows of two people each) can be seated in each car. Passengers must be at least 1.07 m tall to be allowed to ride. Headrests, seat belts and one-click lap bars are used as restraint systems. The lap bars are locked and released by magnets under the train, but sometimes the operator has to unlock them manually.
