Creation and conception

The Hakkenden is based on the epic Nansō Satomi Hakkenden , which Kyokutei Bakin created in the late Edo period . Nansō Satomi Hakkenden ( 南 総 里 見 八 犬 伝 ) comprises 106 volumes and is considered the most extensive work of classical Japanese literature .

The name Hakkenden refers to the main characters of the story, the eight dog warriors Hakkenshi ( 八 犬 士 ). The series consists of three main parts: the prologue, the search and the resolution of the story.

content

The action takes place at the beginning of the Sengoku period in Awa , a small province in what is now Chiba Prefecture . In the fight against a demonic, overpowering enemy, the Satomi clan receives unexpected support from a dog, who as a reward demands and receives the daughter of the clan chief as wife. The eight dog warriors emerged from the connection and were separated from one another as babies after the dog was killed.

During the search, the dog warriors recognize each other by the fact that their surnames begin with inu (dog), a birthmark in the form of a peony and a pearl with a written symbol each of the eight fundamental Confucian values . The final part shows the final battle of the dog warriors in the service of the Satomi clan.
