history

The Glasgow Herald publishing house resided on Buchanan Street, which ran backwards . The current building was created through an extension between 1893 and 1895. The Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh was involved in the planning and was also responsible for two redesigns before 1913. Further revisions were made in 1918, 1929 and 1937.

In 1998 the building was restored as a prestigious project for Glasgow's Year of Architecture and Design 1999 . Since then, it has housed the National Center for Architecture and Design under the name “The Lighthouse” as well as a museum exhibition on the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Various cultural organizations, including the Scottish Arts Coucil and the National Lottery Promotion , have provided funding totaling £ 12.5 million for the development. The expansion of the upper floor to a zero-energy area was funded by the Glasgow City Council and the European Union.
