The Lusty Lady

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lusty Lady was the name of two peep show venues in Seattle and San Francisco . The Lusty Lady San Francisco achieved international fame through labor disputes and the conversion of the establishment into the first self-governing cooperative in this business area. The Lusty Lady is also the subject of various books by Lily Burana, Carol Queen , Erika Langley and Elisabeth Eaves.

history

The Lusty Lady Seattle was founded in the 1970s under the name Amusement Center ; from 1983 the offer was supplemented by live shows. The two places had the same owner until the Lusty Lady in San Francisco was converted into a cooperative in 2003. The conflicts began as early as 1996 when, among others, the African-American feminist sociologist and dancer Siobhan Brooks lodged a complaint against racial discrimination . In the course of the conflict, the mirrored windows were abolished, which had meant that the dancers could not see their customers and, contrary to the regulations, photos and video recordings of the workers were taken. The dancers organized themselves into the Exotic Dancers Union , part of the service union Service Employees International Union , and were supported by The Bay Area Sex Worker Advocacy Network . The 2000 documentary Live Nude Girls Unite by Vicky Funari and Julia Query also generated increased public attention. Numerous improvements such as salary increases, vacation and sick leave regulations were achieved. When the owner announced the closure of the establishment in 2003, the workers were able to purchase the Lusty Lady for $ 400,000. Other cooperatives, such as the self-managed sex shop company Good Vibrations , supported the Lusty Lady with the conversion. Dancers pay $ 300 to become partners in the company and subsequently share in the profits. It has been closed since September 2, 2013.
