The New Criterion is an American literary and cultural magazine . It is published in New York and has a monthly print run of around 6,000.

profile

The New Criticon was founded in 1982 by Hilton Kramer , previously an art critic for the New York Times , and music critic Samuel Lipman . Art and culture critic Roger Kimball is now the publisher alongside Kramer . The name of the magazine Name refers to The Criterion , in the 1920s under the leadership of TS Eliot one of the leading little magazines of the English-language modern age .

The profile of the New Criterion is shaped by a politically tinged conservatism , which is also reflected in a rather classic understanding of literature and art. The magazine is often viewed as the culture-critical organ of the American neocons , and indeed there is some overlap in authorship with other neoconservative papers such as Commentary . Co-editor Roger Kimball is also the owner of Encounter Books , which publishes neoconservative authors such as William Kristol , David Horowitz and Theodore Dalrymple , some of whom have also published articles in the New Criterion .

The paper's conservative stylistic ideal is evident, for example, in the statutes of the poetry prize The New Criterion Poetry Prize , which has been awarded annually since 1999 and which demands "strict attention to form" from the manuscripts submitted.
