The Next Time I Fall is a pop song written by Bobby Caldwell and Paul Gordon. It was interpreted as a duet by Peter Cetera and Amy Grant . The single reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1986 . The Next Time I Fall was nominated for a Grammy in 1987 for Best Duet .

Emergence

The song was written by Bobby Caldwell and Paul Gordon in Caldwell's apartment. Caldwell had just moved in and had but one table and a DX7 - Synthesizer no other furnishings. In this environment, the basic musical structure of the song was created, at a further meeting the music for the refrain was composed and inserted into the structure. Although the songwriters had a finished melody, they still had no idea of the lyrics. Gordon described this as a joint effort in which they both made concessions. The song was not originally intended as a duet, so Caldwell sang the demo alone.

Peter Cetera decided on the song, but really wanted to record it as a duet with a singer. The decision for Amy Grant was unconventional because Cetera wanted to work with a lesser-known singer. Grant saw it as a career opportunity: Although she had quite decent sales at the time, she had not yet had a radio hit. The demo of the song was played to Amy Grant on the phone, and later she received the vocal tracks from Peter Cetera. Amy Grant stopped her current tour for a day to record her vocal tracks in the studio. Guitarist Dann Huff and drummer Chester Thompson contributed to the recordings , the keyboards are from producer Michael Omartian .

publication

The song was first released on Cetera's solo album Solitude / Solitaire and was released as a single in the fall of 1986. The Next Time I Fall reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 6, 1986, where the song stayed for a week. It was only after the song was released that Amy Grant ended her tour and learned that the duet with Peter Cetera had become a number one hit .
