The Nomad Soul (English original title Omikron: The Nomad Soul ) is a computer game that was developed by Quantic Dream and published by Eidos Interactive for Microsoft Windows and Dreamcast . Initially, a PlayStation version was planned, but this was canceled due to insufficient hardware performance. The soundtrack was composed by David Bowie .
action
At the beginning of the game you make the acquaintance of the omicroan policeman Kay'l 669. He asks you to follow him in a parallel dimension according to the omicron (the omicron is the O in the Greek alphabet). Omicron lies on the planet Phaeon, the second planet of the star Rad'an. Kay'l offers the player the opportunity to transfer his soul into Kay'l's body as long as one is on the move in Omikron. But hardly arrived in Omikron, the character is attacked by a demon who robs Kay'l's soul, injures him and leaves him with no memory. From this point on he begins the search for himself, the search for his own self.
Game principle and technology
The player takes over the body of the cop Kay'l first. If he dies, the game continues with another character. Each character has special abilities and characteristics that the player must use carefully in order to achieve the goal of the game. In some places it is even necessary to switch bodies. In the event of an exchange, however, the player loses all items and newly acquired combat techniques. There are a total of twelve bodies to choose from, but only one soul and one character.
As one of the first computer games, The Nomad Soul offers the player complete freedom of movement in the game world. Any building can be entered and any person can be involved in a conversation. In total there are more than 100 speaking figures. The recordings of the movements of all people were created using motion capturing .
Production notes
An elaborate voice output was created for the German version, including the German dubbing voices of Al Pacino, Kevin Costner, Bruce Willis, Jean Reno and Pamela Anderson. Another special thing about The Nomad Soul is the soundtrack. David Bowie was actively involved and contributed six completely new songs. Bowie also plays two characters in the game himself.
reception
|
Omikron: The Nomad Soul achieved mostly positive ratings in the press. The GameRankings review database aggregates a value of 75% from 31 tests . GameSpot criticized the fact that the game combined the three genres of adventure, fighting game and first-person shooter only "with limited success", because the game looks good, but the individual genre elements appeared superficial and sometimes poorly implemented and did not come together to form a unified whole .
