The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else is a song written by Isham Jones (music) and Gus Kahn (lyrics) and published in 1924.

Song structure

Written as a moderate torch song in G major , the song has the form ABA'C. “The simple melody builds on the repetitive rhythm of the fourth and eighth notes; Emphasis is placed on the sixth and fifth degrees of the scale (E and D) and later on the third and second degrees (B and A). In contrast to the lively music is the sad text, which tells the story of an unrequited love in the tradition of the Torch Song ":

It's tough to be alone on the shelf
It's worse to fall in love by yourself .

First recordings

Among the first musicians to record the song from 1924 were Isham Jones and his orchestra (Brunswick), Ted Lewis , the California Ramblers , Doc Cook , Vincent Lopez , and the singers Al Jolson (Brunswick 2567, with the Isham Jones Orchestra ) and Sophie Tucker (Okeh 40054). Eric Borchard and Bernard Etté took him on in Berlin .

Later cover versions

In 1938 Tommy Dorsey made the song known again; Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald played it for Decca . The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 160 (as of 2015) cover versions in the field of jazz . a. by Glenn Miller , Frankie Carle , Will Hudson , Red Norvo , Frank Sinatra, and Sarah Vaughan . The song was also used in several music films; Judy Garland interpreted him in Everybody Sing (1938), Gogi Grant (as singing double for Ann Blyth ) in The Helen Morgan Story (1957). Dannie Thomas and Doris Day sang it in the Gus Kahn biopic I'll See You in My Dreams (1951). Meanwhile, the song's origins as a torch song have been forgotten and it is usually played at a medium jazz tempo.
