The Overlanders were a British folk - pop band from the 1960s.
history
The Overlanders were founded as a folk band in 1963 by Peter Bartholomew, Paul Arnold and Laurie Mason. Despite the successful producer Tony Hatch , they had a hard time against the emerging beat music . They released a number of critically favorably viewed singles without making a commercial breakthrough. Only with Yesterday's Gone did they have a respectable success in the USA in the wake of the British Invasion . Their sound became a little more poppy when they joined forces in January 1966 with drummer David Walsh and bassist Terry Widlake.
The Overlanders had their only big hit in 1966 with Michelle , a Beatles song . It was not released as a Beatles single in the UK, the Overlanders recorded a folky version of the Lennon / McCartney composition that peaked at number 1 in the UK in early 1966 . The version was also successful in Germany, but lagged behind the Beatles' original published here. In the USA they could not place themselves, there it was the version of the duo Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway alias David & Jonathan that had the greater success.
The next two singles missed the charts. In addition, Paul Arnold went his own way from October 1966. With Ian Griffith as a replacement, a joint album followed in 1967 with the Settlers, which again increasingly went in the direction of folk and moved away from the then current music trends. At the end of 1967 the band separated.
Paul Arnold, whose solo career was also unsuccessful, founded the New Overlanders in 1969, but their releases did not make it into the charts.
Terry Widlake formed the duo Cuppa T with Vic Lythgoe and was later in the backing band of Roy Orbison .
