history
The house was designed in 1908 by the architects Hiss and Weekes in the Beaux Arts style as The Gotham . The construction cost 2.25 million USD at the time . The Gotham was one of the first hotels in New York to be constructed as a steel frame structure and was one of the tallest buildings in the city. The Gotham was renovated in 1939 and continued to operate as an apartment hotel until 1978. A second renovation under designer Pierre Cardin followed in 1987; from now on the hotel was called Maxim's de Paris .
The Peninsula Group acquired the hotel in 1988 as its American flagship. The hotel closed in 1998 and renovated for $ 45 million. Even after the reopening, many details in the original Beaux Arts style were retained.
