The Police Force of Malta (Maltese: al-Korp tal-Pulizija ta 'Malta ) is the police force of the Republic of Malta . The police are responsible for public order and security on the main island and the islands of Gozo and Comino . It includes 2,300 police officers and 108 civilian employees (as of 2018).

organization

The first police unit on the island was founded on July 12, 1814 by Thomas Maitland , who later became the island's governor. The duties are set out in the Penal Code of Malta and the Maltese Law on the Police Force.

The Maltese Islands are divided into twelve police districts, which are run by the office of the Divisional Police Force Units. In addition to the regional police units, there is also the Crime Investigation Department, which is responsible for capital crimes throughout the state. The regional police force is supported by a department for drug-related crime (Drugs Squad), a forensic laboratory (Forensic Science Laboratory), a unit for prosecuting high-profile crimes and prosecuting economic criminal cases (Vice Squad and Economic Crimes Unit) and a security service (Protective Services) for the protection of high-ranking persons and a special department (Special Branch). The cooperation with EUROPOL , INTERPOL and the Schengen Information System is coordinated by a further department. Basic tasks, including personnel management, are carried out by the Strategy and Planning Office, the Legal Department and the Finance Office.
