The Railway Series

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Railway Series , German: The Railway Series , is a children's book series on which the television series Thomas the Tank Engine and the musical Starlight Express by Andrew Lloyd Webber based.

The books are about stories from Thomas and his friends who live on the fictional island of Sodor. Every story has a lesson suitable for children. 26 of these books were written by the Rev. Wilbert Vere Awdry in the years 1945-1972 and from 1983 by his son Christopher Awdry , a total of 42 volumes were published by 2011. Wilbert Awdry got the first inspiration for these books as a child, because he lived next to a railway tunnel of the Great Western Railway in Box . He wrote the first stories to cheer up his son Christopher (* 1940), who had measles . All books consist of four stories (the only exception being Henry the Green Engine , which consists of five stories).

Almost all stories are based on events that took place on real railways and all locomotives and other machines that occur are also based on those that exist in reality. The series was illustrated by William Middleton (1945), Reginald Payne (1946), C. Reginald Dalby (1948–1956), John T. Kenney (1957–1962), Gunvor and Peter Edwards (1963–1972) and Clive Spong ( 1983–2011) and edited by Edmund Ward (1945–1968), Kaye & Ward (1968–1998) and Egmont Publishing (since 1998). In Germany, the only published book was published by Ravensburger Taschenbücher .

In 2012, the first four books appeared digitally on Apple iOS devices in the UK . All books are published in English and Japanese. In Germany, the first two books were translated into one book in 1981, "Wilbert Awdry's Talking Railways: Thomas the Tender Locomotive and Other Railway Stories", by Josef Guggenmos .

history

Wilbert Awdry had been interested in steam locomotives all his life and watched them as a child. He imagined the puffing noises of the locomotives as their language and how they talked to each other. When Awdry's three-year-old son Christopher fell ill with measles in 1943 and Wilbert had to cheer him up, he told him stories about live steam locomotives. The first characters were Edward, Gordon and Henry, and Christopher wanted to hear the stories so often that Wilbert ended up writing them down. Wilbert's wife Margeret found these stories and suggested that Wilbert publish them. After a few refusals, the editor Edmund Ward volunteered to print the stories, on condition that the end of the last story was changed: the Henry locomotive was walled up in a tunnel in this one, but was released again in the edited version. The Three Railway Engines finally appeared in 1945.

When writing the stories, it was important to Awdry that they were not aimed directly at children, but rather were easy to read for the people who had to read the stories to the children. Furthermore, the morals of the stories weren't the focus and in fact Awdry wanted his stories to be more different from the classic children's books he had to read with his brother as a kid. Instead, his locomotives should behave more like real people than like good role models.

Broken books

In the 80s Christopher Awdry wrote a book called Barry the Rescue Engine , but it was never published: Because of the success of the TV series, readers wanted to read more stories about Thomas instead of being introduced to more new characters.

C. Awdry still had more material for other narrow-gauge stories.

Accompanying volumes

These accompanying tapes tell the fictional history of Sodor since ancient times . The history of the people, the culture, the geography and that of the railroad are described there in great detail.

  1. Railway Map of the Island of Sodor (Wilbert Awdry, 1958; 1971; 1983)
  2. Twelve Happy Engines (Wilbert Awdry, 1970)
  3. The Railway Series: Surprise Packet (Wilbert Awdry, 1972)
  4. The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways (Wilbert Awdry and George Awdry, 1987)
  5. The Thomas the Tank Engine Man (Brian Sibley, 1995; 2015)
  6. Sodor: Reading Between the Lines (Christopher Awdry, 2005)

Others

Almost all stories are based on events that took place in real life and all machines that occur have a counterpart in reality.

In the history of Henry's Sneeze from Henry the Green Engine Henry sneezes on some boys with soot. In the original version of the book, these boys were then referred to as "as black as niggers". This sparked a dabbot reported in the National Press in 1972. Awdry apologized and changed the sentence to "as black as soot".
