Wilbert Vere Awdry ( June 15, 1911 , † March 21, 1997 in Stroud , Gloucestershire , England ), also known as the Reverend W. Awdry, was a British pastor, railroad fan and author of children's books. One of his best-known works is The Railway Series , the literary model for the television series Thomas, the Little Locomotive .

Life

Wilbert Vere Awdry was born on June 15, 1911 in the Ampfield rectory. He had a younger brother and three half-siblings on his father's side. His father, Vere Awdry, was the Reverend of Ampfield. His mother's name was Lucy Awdry. At the age of six, the family moved to Box and moved within the town two more times. The family had lived in a house near a Great Western Railway in Box tunnel since he was nine .

Awdry graduated from high school in Oxford in 1932 . There he also received his diploma in theology . In 1933 he moved to Jerusalem and taught at St. George's School . When he returned to England in 1936, he became a priest. Two years later he married Margaret Wale. In 1940 he moved to Birmingham , where he worked as a pastor. In 1946 he moved again to the county of Cambridgeshire , in 1953 he was pastor in Emneth . In 1965 he moved to Stroud , where he died on March 21, 1997.

In 1943 he made up a story for the entertainment of his son Christopher. The stories that formed the literary cornerstone for the later television series Thomas, the Little Locomotive , published Awdry for the first time in 1946. He wrote a total of 26 books of the Railway Series by 1972 . In addition, he published a few non-fiction books. In 1995 the biography The Thomas the Tank Engine Man appeared on Awdry.
