The Retreat (Angus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Retreat , formerly Ouchterlony House , is a residential building in the Scottish town of Montrose in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

It is the former seat of the Ouchterlony family , which is why the name Ouchterlony House was common in earlier times . Today the adjacent building at 180-184 High Street bears this name, although a connection with the family is unclear. The Retreat was built in the early 18th century. In the early 19th century the building was redesigned.

description

It is a rear building that is completely covered on the street side by 180-184 High Street. The Retreat consists of a two-story and a three-story building, which are arranged at right angles to each other to create an L-shaped floor plan. If sandstone blocks were installed along the main facades , the masonry along the side facades is embossed and consists of quarry stone along the rear facades . The steeply sloping roofs are covered with gray slate. In the interior, the high quality stucco and plaster work in the Rococo style are to be emphasized. The dining room on the upper floor has cornices and an open fireplace with Corinthian columns.
