The Ruby Suns are an indie pop band from Auckland , New Zealand .

Band history

The band was formed in 2004 after Ryan McPhun, a native of California, moved to Auckland, made numerous musical contributions to bands such as The Brunettes and The Tokey Tones and now wanted to start his own band. At first the formation was called Ryan McPhun & the Ruby Suns and included as other band members Amee Robinson and Imogen Taylor. In 2005 the band was signed to the small label Lil 'Chief Records and released their self-titled debut album that same year. In 2006 the group shortened its name to The Ruby Suns . In spring 2007 the band went on their first European tour to promote their debut. The European distribution was taken over by the Memphis Industries label . In the second half of the year, an extensive tour of Australia followed as the opening act for the Shins . In 2007 the band became aware of the fact that the well-known independent label Sub Pop signed the group. In the same year the band released a number of singles and EPs. In 2008, the band's second studio album, Sea Lion, followed . In 2010 the band released Fight Softly as their third studio album.
