The Sperm Bank of California

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sperm Bank of California (TSBC) is one in 1982 by Barbara Raboy as a non-profit society founded sperm bank in Berkeley in California. In 1983 she patented a program in which sperm donors could voluntarily reveal their identity to children conceived with their sperm if they so wished when they reached the age of majority. This was the first program of its kind in the world. Even if the man chooses to remain anonymous at the time of sperm donation, the sperm bank can, with his consent, connect him to the conceived children as soon as they are 18 years old. According to a 2002 article, 1,100 children had been conceived from the bank's semen at the time, and bank officials said about four in five customers chose the option of disclosing the donor's identity to their adult descendants. Many of the bank's customers are lesbian or women who have chosen to become single mothers.
