The Square (Castlebay)

The Square is a residential building on the Scottish Hebridean island of Barra . In 1971, The Square was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

The building is located in the city center of Castlebay , the main town on the island, opposite the junction on Pier Road on the A888 . The exact date of construction of the building is not known, but it is believed that it dates from the early 19th century. The front faces south over the bay of Castlebay and Kisimul Castle . It is a two-story building with two entrance doors that are approximately symmetrical on either side of the center. There are three windows on each floor along the front, with the two middle windows to the left of the center of the building. The facades are plastered with Harl . The building ends with a slate-covered gable roof with chimneys on the gable surfaces. The converted attic has two hipped dormers . At the back there are two more doors that are accessible via stairs.
