The Star is a national, English-language daily newspaper in South Africa , published by Independent News & Media and one of the highest-circulation daily newspapers in the country. On Saturdays she appears as the Saturday Star .

history

The Star was founded in 1873 as Eastern Star in Grahamstown in what is now the Eastern Cape Province . In 1887 the editors moved to Johannesburg and gave the newspaper its current name. The was the printing press with the ox carts transported. The first edition of the Star appeared on October 17, 1887. The publishing address has since been 47 Sauer Street in Johannesburg. The star appeared twice a week until March 1889 , then every day except Sundays. In 1935 the motto “Telling it like it is” was created, which has remained the newspaper's motto to this day. Originally the target group was white South Africans, today more than half of the readers are black.

In 1999, the newspaper's editors undertook to adhere to rules governing their work, such as hearing both sides in a conflict and not giving advertisers any preferential treatment.

Moegsien Williams has been the publisher since 2002. The Star is the oldest brand in Johannesburg that still exists today . In addition to the Star , the Star Tonight , Star Motoring , Star Classifieds and Business Report newspapers are published, the latter being the best-selling business newspaper in South Africa.

Around 2008 the circulation was 171,542 and the number of readers around 616,000. In the first quarter of 2015, the circulation had dropped to 91,735. Most readers live in the Gauteng Province around Johannesburg. The newspaper is delivered daily by air freight to large parts of South Africa and neighboring countries. The website with the online offer of the Star and other newspapers from the same media group is the most visited website in Africa with 1.3 million different users .

One of the goals of the newspaper is to create a non-racial, non-sexist and unified South Africa based on human rights . The star stands up for the disadvantaged, but at the same time stands for a careful change in circumstances.
