The Storyteller is a television series in which real actors acted with characters from Jim Henson's Creature Shop . It was a US - British co-production which first aired in 1987 and was created and produced by Jim Henson . The individual episodes of the series are based on different European fairy tales (German, Russian, Greek & Celtic origin), which are represented with actors and puppets. In the frame story these stories are told by an old storyteller (English storyteller - played by John Hurt ), who sits by the fireplace and tells each of these legends to his talking dog (a realistic looking doll - played and spoken by Brian Henson ). Rachel Portman wrote the music on the show .
