The Top Notes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Top Notes were a rhythm - & - blues vocal group around the singers Drek Martin and Howard Guyton. In the early sixties the band released a few singles, including a version of the song Twist and Shout .

history

The members of The Top Notes group came from previous Martin and Guyton bands called The Five Pearls, The Sheiks, The Pearls and Howie and the Sapphires. These groups released songs on the labels Aladdin, Cat, Atco and Okeh Records . In addition to Martin and Guyton, George Wilson Torrence Jr. and singers known as Roy and Johnny were also founding members. After the band changed record labels in 1961, other members were added such as Barbara Wells, Dionne Warwick and Rosco King.

Under the band name The Top Notes, the band signed a recording deal with Atlantic Records in 1960 and released two singles A Wonderful Time and Say Man in the same year .

In 1961 the band recorded the songs Twist and Shout under the direction of Phil Spector , who had already produced the first version of the song by Phil Medley and Bert Berns . The song wasn't a hit. The Top Notes then no longer released a song on the Atlantic Records label . Twist and Shout was recorded in 1962 by the band The Isley Brothers and in 1963 by the Beatles (see The Beatles / Discography ). The Beatles reached number one on the US charts with the song.

In 1963 the band recorded their last song, I Love You So Much .
