The Town I Loved So Well

The Town I Loved So Well is a 1973 song by Irish musician Phil Coulter who deals with the Northern Ireland conflict .

The first three stanzas of the song deal with the simple but happy life in the working-class neighborhoods of Derry , Northern Ireland , where the narrator grew up. The last two stanzas deal with the bloody conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Derry. It shows how the previously described idyllic place turned into a scene of civil war and how the quiet streets, familiar from childhood, are now lined by tanks of the army.

The song was originally recorded by the Irish band The Dubliners ; it was released in 1973 on the album Plain and Simple . Coulter was the producer of the album. Hannes Wader covered this song under the title Kleine Stadt .
