action

The Town of Light takes place in the actually existing Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra, a neurological clinic founded in Volterra near Florence in 1887 . The plot is fictional, but based on real events. The player takes on the role of 16-year-old Renée, who was admitted to the asylum in 1938 and who returns to the dilapidated complex in the game to find her memories of the place.

Game principle and technology

The Town of Light is a 1st-person adventure, which means that the events are presented from the perspective of the player. The camera can be rotated freely in all directions with the mouse or gamepad; Navigation within the game world is carried out using the WASD buttons or the gamepad. It's a point-and-click adventure ; the mouse pointer is always in the middle of the screen and changes its appearance when it is positioned over objects in the game world with which an interaction is possible. The interaction can then be initiated using the mouse buttons or the gamepad.

The Town of Light received mixed reviews. Metacritic aggregates 22 reviews to an average of 64. Der Spiegel saw parallels in the gameplay to the multi-award-winning adventure games Dear Esther and Gone Home . Reviewer Carsten Görig described isolation, escape into one's own world and hopelessness as central elements of the game, which is difficult to bear because of its real background and which lacks the ease of traditional horror games. Görig criticized the game's stale technology at the time of publication.
