The series tells of the experiences of the American pilot and Vietnam War veteran Travis Morgan in the "forgotten world" of Skartaris, a wonderland inside the globe, into which he ended up after he had previously traveled from with his SR-71 jet overlooked by mankind in the North Pole , which turns out to be a hole in the earth's crust that serves as a portal into the earth's interior. The title Warlord is derived from the name that the inhabitants of Skartaris give to Travis Morgan, stranded in their world, because of his superior military skills.

Skartaris, the setting of the warlord adventures, is a colorful amalgam of various elements from knight, science fiction and fantasy literature. In it, stone age people and incarnate magic of the Middle Ages meet, futuristic robots and primeval creatures such as mammoths, saber-toothed tigers and dinosaurs come together, knights collide with scientists who seem to come from a utopian future.

After his arrival in Skartaris, Travis Morgan quickly adapted to the circumstances of his wondrous new surroundings: Equipped with a suitable outfit consisting of a loincloth and - wrongly attributed to the Vikings - horned helmet , with a magnificent sword ("Hellfire") and an Auto Mag pistol, sends he sets himself up to turn the deplorable conditions in Skartaris on its head: He goes into battle against villains such as the evil magician Deimos and various despotic kings, finds a companion in the scantily clad wild Tara ("Queen of Shamballa) and ranks with them At the time various helpers were around, such as the clever Machiste , the stranded Russian archaeologist Mariah , Shakira - a feline graceful woman who can transform into a panther - and his own daughter Jennifer , who followed him after Skartaris . Together with Tara, Morgan fathered a son , Joshua (Tinder) who is born in issue # 15.

Every Warlord adventure was preceded by the introductory sentence:

"In the savage world of Skartaris,
life is a constant struggle for survival.
Here, beneath an unblinking orb of eternal
sunlight, one simple law prevails:
If you let down your guard for an instant you will soon be very dead. "

During an appearance in the cartoon series "Justice League Unlimited" Travis Morgan was dubbed in the American original by the actor Paul Guilfoyle .

The series comprises 133 issues plus 6 special issues entitled "Warlord Annual" . Creator and longtime author and illustrator of the series was the writer Mike Grell , who first wrote the figure of Travis Morgan in "First Issue Special" # 8 from November 1975. With issue # 63, the artist Dan Jurgens took on the task of the illustrator that he did should be retained until the series with # 133 is discontinued. In addition, the adventures of "Arion the Magician" were included in the back of the series for years.

The 2006 attempt by DC to recycle the warlord concept in a revised form failed: The new Warlord series written by Bruce Jones and drawn by Bart Sears brought it to just 10 issues.

From June 2009 to September 2010 a sequel to the original series was released entitled "Warlord", written by Mike Grell and illustrated by Joe Prado and Walden Wong.
