Theater of the night
Theater der Nacht is the name of a German puppet theater from Northeim in Lower Saxony .
Surname
The theater of the night got its name because its actors “love night characters, dreamlike stories and wondrous characters”. Fairy tales, myths and legends are the focus of her artistic work. They draw their ideas and stories for the stage from the realm of the fantastic.
history
The Theater der Nacht was created in 1988 on the initiative of the artist couple Ruth and Heiko Brockhausen. In the mid-1990s, the theater group , founded as a touring theater , discovered the former Northeim fire station and proposed to the city of Northeim to convert the building into a puppet theater.
Four years later, in May 1999, work began on converting the house into a puppet theater. After about two years of renovation, the theater of the night was opened with a ceremony in August 2001. The building near the St. Sixti Church is a low-energy building and has an auditorium for 99 spectators. After renovation grants and subsidies as start-up financing, the theater is self-financing.
program
Every year there are 200 performances, courses, exhibitions and lectures in the puppet theater program. Of the 20,000 visitors a year, 80 percent are adults and 20 percent are children. In addition to the performances of the program, the theater offers courses in figure play, figure and mask making or in drumming and making music for adults and children.
The German office of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA), the oldest international theater association, has been in the theater since 2003 . Since 2016 the theater has been hosting the German puppet theater conference on behalf of UNIMA Germany and the VDP (Association of German Puppet Theaters). This event combines theory and practice, the German with the international puppet theater scene, amateurs and professionals. It always takes place on the last weekend in August in Northeim.
