UNIMA is the world's oldest and most widespread theater association. There are 101 national centers.

Affiliated to UNESCO , UNIMA pursues the goal of using puppetry and puppet theater in the sense of human rights such as peace , freedom and mutual understanding - both purely between people and in the larger community of peoples.

In this sense, the association unites all conceivable forms of puppet theater under its roof, such as object theater, shadow play and, of course, traditional puppetry in all its forms of representation and appearance.

At its council meeting in Atlanta in June 2002, UNIMA declared March 21st International Puppetry Day .

Max Jacob was one of the UNIMA presidents as the first German president after the Second World War, which was particularly significant with regard to the international understanding of the association.

Germany

UNIMA Germany was founded in 1972 and in 2010 had around 450 members. In Germany, UNIMA publishes the magazine DAT - the other theater , which mainly deals with the newer and less with the traditional forms of puppet theater.

Switzerland

UNIMA Suisse was founded in 1959 and has 186 professional, part-time and therapeutic puppet theater members. In Switzerland twice the magazine appears in figura . It gives an overview of the work of the Swiss puppeteer scene .

UNIMA congresses

The international UNIMA congresses take place every four years, usually combined with a festival.
