Theater café (Graz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The theater café in Graz is located on the ground floor of Mandellstrasse 11, which Heinrich Aufschläger built as a residential building in 1867. The conversion to a café took place years later and on September 19, 1885 the bar was opened as Café Aufschläger and was owned by the family for a long time. In 1920 it changed hands and from then on operated under the name Taverne , in 1933 it was renamed Café Munich . In 1945 it was given its current name, Theatercafé . Over the years, the original daytime café became a nighttime café that Dieter Slanz ran from 1965 and made it a well-known meeting place for artists. It was also he who brought the “Cabaret Gimpel” to his restaurant in 1983 . This soon resulted - separately in terms of personnel and organization - of permanent events at the Hin & Wider theater café, which has been awarding the Graz Kleinkunstvogel every year since 1987 . Tanja Baumgartiger has been running the listed restaurant since 2008, which is also famous for its egg dishes.
