Theodoor Verhey

Theodoor Verhey (born June 10, 1848 in Rotterdam ; † January 28, 1929 there ; full name Theodorus Hendricus Hubertus Verhey ) was a Dutch composer .

After attending the Rotterdam Music School, Verhey studied piano, cello, theory and composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . He later took lessons from Woldemar Bargiel (a half-brother of Clara Schumann ). From the age of about 25 he emerged as a composer of chamber music, piano pieces and songs. This was followed by an overture, 2 symphonies, concerts (including 2 flute concertos in D minor op. 43 and A minor op. 57 as well as a violin concerto in A minor op. 54) and choral music (especially Catholic sacred music). He was best known for three German-language operas, all of which premiered in Rotterdam: A Midsummer Celebration on Amron , 1880; Imilda , 1885 and King Arpad , 1888. Verhey earned his living teaching piano and theory at the Rotterdam Music School.
