The Theodor-Heuss-Platz is a square in the city center of Osnabrück. With the main train station on the square and the bus station on the square, the square next to Neumarkt is the most important transfer point for Osnabrück public transport.

location

Theodor-Heuss-Platz is located in the northeast corner of the Osnabrück city center. The main railway lines Löhne-Rheine and the railway line Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg cross here in the station . To the south of the square, the Wallring runs past the Bahnhofsviertel.

history

The square was created with the construction of the main train station in 1895.

Redesign

In 1996 the city of Osnabrück launched an ideas competition for the redesign of the square. The redesign of the square was technically implemented under the direction of the Wiesbaden architect Helge Bofinger in a joint venture with Martin Heiderich and the Hahm planning office.

Between 2000 and 2001 an elliptical 60 × 20 meter glass roof was built over the bus platform, which encloses a linden tree that is located in the bus platform.

The triangular well, which was leaking over time, was emptied in 2011. After an agreement was reached with the architect Helge Bofinger, the fountain was demolished in 2017. Instead of the fountain, there is now an event area that is used in various ways.

Buildings and art

Several hotels of various price categories, a cinema and bowling alley and a parking garage are grouped around the square.

Osnabrück Central Station

The main train station, which opened in 1895, is located on Theodor-Heuss-Platz. It replaced the Hanover station to the west on the Löhne-Rheine railway line, as well as the Bremen station on the Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg railway line just north of the square.

Battle Drums

Battle Drums on the Theodor-Heuss-Platz

The installation "Battle Drums" created by New York artist Dennis Oppenheim for the 2000th anniversary of the Varus Battle in 2009 is located on Theodor-Heuss-Platz. It was installed here in the spring of 2009 and should remain there until July 31, 2014. However, it was agreed to extend it for a further three years. The installation took place on the initiative of the former Documenta director Jan Hoet , who inspired other works of art and sculptures for the Varus Battle in the region. The rotating drums throw lights in the form of fighting warriors and spears onto the square in the dark.
