Theodor von Holst
Theodor Richard Edward von Holst (born September 3, 1810 in London ; † February 14, 1844 there ) was a representative of romantic painting in England.
He was a student of Henry Fuseli and attended the Royal Academy of Arts . The painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti saw him as a forerunner of the Pre-Raphaelites . In 1841 he married Amelia Thomasina Symmes Villard. In 1844 he died of a liver disease. The composer Gustav Holst was his great-nephew.
The majority of his drawings and paintings deal with figures and scenes from well-known literary works. The painter painted his best-known painting "The Bride" in three versions. The painting “The Desire” served Rossetti as the basis for a poem. During his lifetime, his work was recognized by his painting colleagues, but not by the general public in London.
