Theodora Komnene (Trebizond)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodora Komnene (* before 1253 , † after 1285 ) was Empress and Grand Comneness of Trebizond from 1284 to 1285 .

Theodora was a daughter of the Trapezuntian emperor Manuel I and his second wife, a Georgian princess named Rusudan.

In 1284 Theodora succeeded for a short time with her half-brother John II with the support of David VI. To drive Narin , the Georgian king of Imereti , from the Trapezuntian throne and to cast himself as empress. Their reign was short-lived, however, as John II was able to defeat them as early as 1285 and thus regain the dignity of emperor. From the short reign of Theodoras some coins minted at her instigation have survived.
