Theodorus "Dirk" Jozef Dekker (born March 1, 1927 ) is a Dutch mathematician .

Dekker received his Masters degree in Mathematics in 1954 and his PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 1958 . His dissertation was entitled Paradoxical Decompositions of Sets and Spaces . His doctoral supervisor was Johannes de Groot .

He then went to the Mathematical Center in Amsterdam, where he was involved in programming in Algol 60 , among other things . In 1971 he became Professor of Numerics at the University of Amsterdam, where he stayed until his retirement in 1992. There he was one of the founders of the computer science department in 1981.

His research areas include numerics, numerical software and number theory.

The Dekker algorithm is named after Dekker , which enables two processes to use a single resource without conflict.
