Theopompus (Sparta)

Theopompos ( Greek  Θεόπομπος ) was from the end of the 8th century to the beginning of the 7th century BC. BC Spartan king from the house of the Eurypontids .

Theopompus was the son of Nicandros ; his exact reign is not known. In 757 BC He is said to have introduced the ephorate in Sparta or significantly enhanced it, if one ascribes his institution to the Lycurgus .

Under him and his colleague Polydoros from the House of the Agiads , Sparta waged war to reclaim Messinia . Only after the conquest of the mountain fortress Ithome was the 1st Messenian War ended in favor of the Spartans. The Spartan poet Tyrtaios praises Theopompus as the conqueror of the Messenians, who thus brought new lands to Sparta.
