from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theresia Irmgard Sibilla Freifrau von Oeyen (born December 2, 1696 in Leuth , † September 23, 1779 in Mönchengladbach ) was an abbess .

Life

Theresia Irmgard Sibilla was a daughter of Wilhelm Seger van Oeyen and Eva Felicitas Perpetua van Voordt de Meldert. From April 24, 1744 she was abbess in the Benedictine convent for noble women in Neuwerk . There was great dissension among the nuns during her tenure. The previous abbess, Clara Sophia von Bönninghausen , was relieved of her office on April 24, 1744, but refused to give way and called the Jülische government for help, which took care of her. On September 4, 1744, 50 to 60 armed soldiers entered Neuwerk. The monastery gate, all entrances and the enclosure were broken open with force and Clara Sophia von Bönninghausen reinstated as abbess.

Theresia von Oeyen had to flee and looked for help from the Elector of Cologne. The disputes lasted until September 19, 1747, when the elector, without objection from the Jülischen government, issued an order that the Neuwerker nuns should show obedience and deference to the Abbess von Oeyen. Theresa von Oeyen was reinstated as superior on October 30, 1747.

Theresia Irmgard Sibilla von Oeyen died on September 23, 1779 in Mönchengladbach-Neuwerk. In the Neuwerk parish archives there is a description of the Neuwerk monastery dedicated to the Abbess von Oeyen.
