Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey (also Thikse , Tikse or Tiksey , Tibetan ཁྲིག་ ཙེ་ དགོན་ པ Wylie Khrig-tse Dgon-pa ) is a Buddhist temple ( gompa ) and monastery complex, which is about 18 km away from the district capital Leh in the north-west Indian mountain region Ladakh is located.

The monastery is located almost 3300 m above sea level on a hill in the upper Indus valley . It was founded in the early 15th century. His (currently approx. 70) monks belong to the Buddhist Gelugpa (yellow hat) order. The monastery complex extends over 12 steps or terraces up the hill. It includes 10 temples, among others. In one of them there is a 15 m high gold-plated Buddha statue . Another temple is dedicated to the goddess Dorje Chenmo . The monastery also has a number of sacred shrines and a collection of historical thangkas (scroll paintings) and other historical works of art. For a few years there has also been a guest house where you can stay overnight.
