Sachsenklemme
The Sachsenklemme is a historical location in the so-called "Sack" between Grasstein and Mittewald in the Wipptal in the municipality of Franzensfeste ( South Tyrol ).
During the Fifth Coalition War , General Lefebvre and his troops advanced south through the Eisack Valley during the Tyrolean struggle for freedom on August 4th and 5th, 1809 . Near Franzensfeste, the association of 500 Tyrolean riflemen under Peter Mayr was wiped out in the Eisack Gorge, the Sachsenklemme later named after the event. The name came about because the general's association also contained a large contingent of Saxon and Thuringian troops who bore the brunt of the battle.
In the battle at the Sachsenklemme, the Bavarian artillery officer Alois von Hornberger (1779-1845) acquired the Military Max Joseph Order on August 5, 1809 as a result of personal bravery and was ennobled.
In the Sachsenklemme formerly was a granite - Quarry (Stötter).
