Emergence

In 1974 Thim van der Laan (1924–1993) founded the Academie voor Fysiotherapie Thim van der Laan in Utrecht . He was convinced that everyone is capable of developing their talents and thereby realizing their own ideals. Basic attitude, motivation, assertiveness, discipline and, last but not least, enjoyment of the job were important to him. That is why his motto in life was: "Nihil volentibus arduum." Freely translated: "Where there is a will, there is a way". The main pillars have always been the imparting of professional expertise and the promotion and maturation of the student's personality. Today the Thim van der Laan University of Physiotherapy is located in Nieuwegein . In the 1980s there was a restructuring of the Dutch higher education system, with Thim van der Laan's school being incorporated into today's Utrecht University . However, Thim van der Laan decided again in 1991 to found his own private university for physiotherapy. This second training was initially located in a training center in the city center of Utrecht. It has been based in Nieuwegein since 2001.

At the end of the 1980s, Thim van der Laan first considered the intention of founding an academy for aspiring physiotherapists in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland , as it was difficult for hospitals, nursing homes and private practices to find trained specialists at the time. In 1990, the canton of Graubünden granted the educational institution the provisional and in 1992 the definitive approval. At the end of 1990 the first course began with 22 students.

Since 2008, a so-called dual study program has been offered in cooperation with partner schools in Germany. This study program also leads to a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy.

Structure and direction

Since his death, the university has been headed equally by his sons Thim van der Laan and Jeroen van der Laan. The brothers are equal shareholders in Thim van der Laan BV, which owns the Thim van der Laan international college for physiotherapy. As a result, the university has existed as a family business since it was founded in 1974, which can be described as extraordinary in today's university landscape.

Training courses

In the Netherlands, both full-time and part-time training in physiotherapy are offered. In Switzerland, the full-time variant and, since 2017, part-time studies are offered. In Germany, a dual, part-time training program is offered, which is primarily aimed at those who have completed the German training to become physiotherapists without a university degree.

Number of students

In 2017 there are around 800 full-time and part-time students studying in the Dutch study programs; 200 students are enrolled in Switzerland, while the number of students in Germany is around 400.

recognition

All graduates of the Bachelor's program receive the Dutch Bachelor of Science degree in Physiotherapy. The study program is recognized by the NVAO (Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organization), most recently by resolution of December 17, 2012, valid until the end of 2018.
