General structure

Thiurame is an abbreviation for the IUPAC called thiuram sulfides (bisthiocarbamoyl sulfane).

Thiurams can be obtained from dithiocarbamates by reaction with phosgene . The thiuuram monosulfides are used as initiators for ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM). The thiuram disulfides are produced by mild oxidation from dithiocarbamates and are used as vulcanization accelerators for rubber (e.g. zinc diethyldithiocarbamate ). The tetramethylthiuram disulfide is also used as a fungicide ( thiram ) and the tetraethylthiuram disulfide as an anti-alcoholic ( disulfiram ).
